One of the most perplexing fields of medicine is the autoimmune diseases. Conditions where the body misfires and attacks itself. In Gravesβ disease an abnormal autoimmune response leads to the release of antibodies, which damage the thyroid.
βAnd it will stimulate the thyroid gland to produce more hormones. So when you have overproduction of that hormone that will affect your metabolism,β explains Lee Memorial Health System endocrinologist Dr. Heitham Ajlouni.
A rare disorder, itβs most common in young women. The symptoms, while noticeable seem to point to a mystery malady. Studies show it takes several doctor visits, often to different specialists to finally make the diagnosis.
βYou will start losing weight regardless of your appetite. The other thing you have is a fast heartbeat. You have changes of your hair and skin. You will have heat intolerance, excess of sweating. Gravesβ disease effect the eye, so their eyeball will protrude,β says Dr. Aljouni.
The cause of Gravesβ is still a mystery. But there are some clues: a family history makes it likely thereβs a genetic predisposition. Females are more likely to have it and it usually appears before age 40. Having another autoimmune disorder is also a red flag.
βItβs associated with other autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis or cirrhosis or pernicious anemia, because if you have one or two immune disease you are at higher risk of having another autoimmune disease,β says Dr. Aljouni.
Once diagnosed, patients have choices of medical managements. With the mystery solved, itβs important to get treatment or risk serious health consequences.

Scripps News examines the fight against a virus that has killed millions of people around the world in the last generation.
We’re closer to a cure for HIV than ever before. This half hour, Scripps News examines the fight against a virus that has killed millions of people around the world in the last generation.
In 2023 there were nearly 40 million people living with HIV. Some 30.7 million of them receive antiretroviral treatment. Despite recent advances in preventing infections, more than a million people are expected to become newly infected in 2024. More than 600,000 will die of HIV/AIDS.
But a handful of people have now been cured, thanks to recent breakthroughs in treatment.
We speak with experts who first identified HIV/AIDS about the progress in countering the disease. We investigate new therapies that exploit the HIV-resistant genetics of donated stem cells, or prevent HIV infections in the first place. And we hold heartfelt conversations with HIV survivors who are growing their own healthy families and engaging with the community to promote HIV/AIDS awareness.
