Why it’s so hard to cure HIV/AIDS – Janet Iwasa

cures No Comments »

View full lesson: https://ed.ted.com/lessons/why-it-s-so-hard-to-cure-hiv-aids-janet-iwasa

In 2008, something incredible happened: a man was cured of HIV. In over 70 million HIV cases, this was a first, and, so far, a last, and we don’t yet understand exactly how he was cured. But if we can cure people of various diseases, like malaria and hepatitis C, why can’t we cure HIV? Janet Iwasa examines the specific traits of the HIV virus that make it so difficult to cure.

Lesson by Janet Iwasa, animation by Javier SaldeΓ±a.

A New York woman may be the first to have been cured using a new paradigm of treatment.

From 1981, when the first patients with HIV were identified, to 2007 – a cure for the deadly virus would have been a miracle. And then, Timothy Ray Brown – known as β€œThe Berlin Patient” was cured. And just like that, a miracle became science.

Mr. Brown had been diagnosed with HIV in 1995. In 2006, he was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia which would require a donor bone marrow stem cell transplant for treatment. But this wasn’t just any donor. His donor was one of less than 1% of the world’s population, with a unique genetic mutation known as the CCR5-βˆ†32 mutation. This rendered the donor’s immune cells resistant to HIV.

It was a gamble, to be sure, but it proved to be a successful one. Mr. Brown lived from 2007 to 2020 without the need for anti-retroviral therapy. He died from a relapse of AML. No HIV was detected at the time of his death.

The question, of course is simple: why can’t more people be cured of HIV?

GHB: The Party Drug Killing Ravers | High Society

cures No Comments »

GHB can make you happy and horny with no comedown but a millilitre too much can put you in a coma, or be fatal. And whilst you’re more likely to have heard about GHB in the context of the chemsex scene, or its abuse as a date rape drug, there’s a lack of reporting about its prevalence in the dance music scene.

We went out to investigate just how widespread GHB abuse has become, and what we uncovered is alarming. A hidden G epidemic has been spreading through raves and clubs across Europe, leaving a trail of death in its wake.

In this special episode from a new series of High Society, we meet Holland’s hardcore fanatics, we travel to Ibiza to see how far the drug has seeped into regular party life, and the Scottish DJ Jackmaster speaks openly about his GHB addiction, for the first time since he was accused of sexually harassing festival staff at a British festival in 2018.

This episode is the first of five new reports about five new alarming drug cultures.

Acute Gastritis (Stomach Inflammation) | Causes, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

Acute gastritis is a condition involving inflammation of the gastric (stomach) mucosa. A wide variety of factors can cause acute gastritis including some bacterial infections, consumption of certain beverages and some medications. This inflammation of the stomach lining leads to a variety of symptoms. In this lesson, we discuss a large list of causes of acute gastritis, including all of the signs and symptoms, complications of acute gastritis, and how clinicians diagnose and treat acute gastritis.

*IMPORTANT NOTE: I forgot to mention that in the case of B12 deficiency caused by gastritis (which can be from atrophic gastritis or autoimmune gastritis), B12 INJECTIONS are required as oral supplements will not be absorbed efficiently!*

Natural ayurvedic home remedies for gout – Dr. Priya Jain

cures No Comments »

The patient suffering from gout should avoid red meat completely, alcoholic beverages, carbonated drinks should be avoided, so diet plays a very important role because is due to deposition of uric acid in the body. There is a substance called purine in our diet which converted into uric acid through metabolism. So if we have substances with less of urine then uric acid levels also get reduced in our body and patients would not have more pain. We can do raktamokshana that is removing of impure blood can be done with sewage or even with litches also. In extreme cases of gout where there is lots of pain dahan karma can also be done. Vasthanam and dhara also a important part in gout. vasthanam is take a clean clear cotton wap dip it in warm castor oil and roll it on the effected area, this can also be done with castor leaves also as the leaves are big just dip them in the warm castor oil and wrap it on the affected area. Dhara is nothing but the decoctions made out of different herbs like neem dhara, the decoction should be lukewarm and should pour it from a certain height in the affected area. Now the diet part, uric acid can be neutralised with vitamin C, it plays a very important role in controlling of gout. When gout is severe having 3 liters of orange juice for first two days, complete fasting with orange juice drastically the uric acid levels come to a normal phase and then we can start with external remedies. Citric acid is also necessary patients can have orange juice, lime juice on daily basis, they can eat one amla indian gooseberry every day. Gaut patient should be very cautious about their diet and maintain it. Other ayurvedic remedies like oil massages may be really useful.

Dr. Timothy Young of the Issaquah Foot & Ankle Specialists does a complete walkthrough of the treatment options for gout. For more information, please visit www.BestFootDoc.com
