Bioinformatics: A way to deciphere DNA and cure life's deadliest diseases | Spencer Hall | TEDxUGA

diseases No Comments »

Spencer Hall is a student with an idea that has the potential to save thousands of lives. His personal experience with Cystic Fibrosis and his understanding of Statistics has lead him to believe that Statistical analysis of DNA could hold the key to placing some of life’s deadliest diseases in the past.

Spencer Hall is a fourth year Statistics major and Philosophy minor. Hall plans on attending graduate school to pursue a master’s in Statistics with a concentration in Bioinformatics. Hall has had first-hand experience with a chronic illness that could be benefited by the application of bioinformatics. His talk is about how the massive amount of genetic data available today is too large to be analyzed without statistical methods, and has consequences so important that we cannot afford not to study it.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

You can also Set up an essential oil diffuser in your home or office to breathe the pain away.

Lavender oil is one of the best natural treatments for hair loss and encouraging new hair growth. Along with rosemary oil, it has been identified to promote hair growth. It is especially helpful in hair loss due to autoimmune reasons. Take about 100 ml of jojoba, olive or coconut oil. Add 8 – 10 drops of lavender oil and rosemary oil each. Mix it well. Take a small amount of this oil and massage it on the balding patches.

In a recent study scientists tested the effects of lavender essential oil on diabetes patients and found that lavender oil treatment protected the body from Increased glucose, Weight gain and Liver and kidney dysfunction. Apply lavender oil topically to your neck and chest or diffuse it at home.

Lavender oil opens up airways during mild attacks of asthma by promoting relaxation of the respiratory muscles. It helps in alleviating bronchial spasms that occur in asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Diffuse a combination of lavender and eucalyptus or peppermint inside the house using a vaporizer. You can also add several drops of the oil into a bowl with hot water. Cover your head with a towel and inhale the steam from the bowl.

Lavender oil helps reduce blemishes by penetrating pores, it may go far in preventing and healing breakouts. You can apply lavender oil diluted in coconut oil to your skin after you wash your face. This will not only moisturize, but also help to reduce breakouts.

Several studies have found that lavender oil helps to relieve pain. Simply rubbing lavender into the area of concern can reduce inflammation and pain intensity, helping to alleviate the symptoms of many health conditions.

Due to its soothing and healing properties, lavender may provide benefits to skin afflicted by eczema or psoriasis. It can help to relieve the itch and irritation of psoriasis, and it may help with eczema outbreaks, especially when combined with chamomile.

Lavender oil is excellent for inducing sleep. Apply a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow. This reduces the restlessness or agitation in the mind, calms the spirit and allows one to get sound sleep. If you apply some oil on the feet in diluted form, it helps with restless leg syndrome.

Research shows that lavender oil speeds the healing of burns, cuts, scrapes and wounds and a big part of this is because of its antimicrobial compounds. Mix 3–5 drops of lavender oil with ½ teaspoon of coconut oil and apply the mixture to the area of concern.

Lavender’s antimicrobial ability is enhanced when it’s blended with other essential oils, like clove, cinnamon and tea tree oil. Researchers found that a 1:1 ratio of these oils was found to be most effective in fighting against fungal and bacterial infections.
Lavender oil also works to stimulate the immune system, boost mood and improve sleep.

When buying lavender essential oil, make sure you are buying from a high-quality brand that is therapeutic grade and that it is organic, so it hasn’t been sprayed with chemicals. This is important if you are planning to use it topically.

BIOLOGICAL MEDICINE as practiced by Dr. Thomas Rau, M.D., Director of the Swiss Paracelsus Klinik Lustmuhle, combines the most modern diagnostic equipment with a wide range of traditional natural healing methods. It also integrates dentistry, as there is such a close relationship between teeth and health. BIOLOGICAL MEDICINE is a comprehensive and integrated approach to health and illness. It is “biological” and shows logically how we get ill by identifying the sequential phases of degeneration which lead from minor ailments to various chronic diseases. Illness is defined as a loss of regulatory capacity; that is, the inability to correctly respond to a wide variety of internal, environmental and lifestyle factors. The internal milieu or terrain, a central idea in BIOLOGICAL MEDICINE, needs to be balanced so that pathogenic microbial forms cannot develop and cause numerous diseases. Internal sites of chronic focal infections and “disturbance fields” but also toxic burdens are other important factors frequently overlooked in the treatment of degenerative diseases. In BIOLOGICAL MEDICINE, healing is defined as the restoration of regulatory capacity. This is achieved by removing the physical and emotional blockages to self-healing. Detoxification methods, immune system activation and the mobilization of healing at the psycho-spiritual level enable the regeneration of the body, mind and soul.

How a rare blood disorder made me a mother | Dana-Farber/Boston Children's

Tracy Antonelli was diagnosed with thalassemia at the age of 4; her body can’t make enough oxygen-carrying red blood cells. When she and her husband were ready to start a family, they looked to China, where thalassemia is relatively prevalent, and found three special girls.

The care that the girls now receive at Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center Includes regular blood transfusions, medication to remove excess iron from their bodies, and careful monitoring.

The thalassemias are a group of inherited blood disorders in which the genes that produce hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body, are broken. As a result, the red blood cells do not contain enough hemoglobin, causing anemia that can range from mild to life threatening. Thalassemia can come in different forms depending on the genetic mutations causing it. The transfusion-dependent form, also called thalassemia major or Cooley’s Anemia, requires lifelong follow-up care and regular blood transfusions. Some other forms are more readily managed and may require little or no treatment.

Thalassemia Treatment at Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s

At the Dana-Farber/Boston Children’s Thalassemia Program, our experts provide comprehensive care for children and adults with all forms of thalassemia. For many appointments and certain procedures, your child also can receive care at one of our satellite offices. Treatment for thalassemia depends on the subtype of the disorder, but may include:

– blood transfusions for anemia, based on severity
– regular and comprehensive monitoring for complications of thalassemia and of treatments
– iron chelation therapy, to remove excess iron from the body
– for certain cases, stem cell transplantation to replace the blood-forming stem cells with the defective hemoglobin gene(s)
